The Capelinhos Volcano is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, tourist attraction on the island of Faial. The volcano remained active for 13 months, between September 27, 1957 and October 24, 1958. The eruption was characterized by two main phases, an underwater phase, characterized by the emission of volcanic ash and water vapor and a subaerial phase that alternated between more explosive periods, with the emission of volcanic bombs, and more effusive periods, associated with the emission of lava flows, increasing the perimeter of the island of Faial.
Next to the volcano, there is the old lighthouse that survived the explosions and that today has an interpretation center underground that can be visited by paying an entrance fee.
The Capelinhos Volcano is about a 1-hour drive from the city of Horta
